Did people in ancient times have better memories than we do today?

I'm writing a report on the spread of Buddhism, and in the First Buddhist Council Buddha's followers compiled all of his teachings into one compendium of knowledge - but they did it all without writing. As in, they recalled (supposedly verbatim) the words he had used when preaching, and then everyone at the council memorized volumes' worth of sermons. I can't imagine anyone possibly doing that today, but unless the history books are lying people used to be able to do it.
