Did nature help or hurt Chris Mccandless in the book "into the wild'?

i have a feelgin that nature helped his b/c it allowed his to get away from the hassles of society, but then again it also made living in the wild difficult.
this is all based on hte book into the wild by jon krakauer
please write if you think nature helped/hurt him and three reasons as to why
all help appreciated
