well...yesterday my parents bought me a new bike for my birthday which is today. and as soon as i got it i went on a little biking trip with my dad. and today...everytime i change the gears, it changes perfectly. but i keep hearing a sound like something is hitting the chains. or the sound that the gears make when they change but it's permenant...why?! it broke on my bday :(

It may be something really simple. It could be the front derailleur guide is rubbing on the chain when the bike is in either a low gear or a high gear on the rear derailleur. I'll assume a 21 speed bike. With the front derailleur (left shifter) in the number two spot, and the rear derailleur in first gear, see if it makes this noise. If it does, then try shifting into a higher gear. The sound should go away because the chain is moving away from the guide. Nothing to worry about. Happens all the time. It's normal. The chain on my bike rubs the guide in this position too. As soon as I roll, I shift into 2nd gear & the noise disappears.

If you're that sure something is wrong - take it back to where it was purchased. Or, take it to a bike shop for a quick look by a real mechanic. I'm sure they won't charge just for a quick look.

You said, "...or the sound that the gears make when they change but it's permenant..".
This sounds like the rear derailleur is out of adjustment. If you didn't have a crash or bank the derailleur into something, it'll be a quick fix. Take it to the placed purchased or to the nearest bike shop and let them look at it.
