I read a partial biography on him and yes he had tattoos and yes he was in the military. He always wore long sleeves because he didn't want the children to see his tattoos. He didn't think it was appropriate. He left the military very well decorated for heroism. He was a truly wonderful man all his life. He became Mr. Rogers because he loved children and he hated what he had to do as a soldier and wanted to do something to kind of make up for it.
