Did men really whip their wives in the olden days?

my teacher says men were allowed to whip there wives as long as the whip was a certain size. i don't care, if i lived back then i wouldn't have put up with that
 
You say that now, but it was just how the world was back then. Women didn't know anything different, and neither would you if you had been born during that time.

And I think they were allowed to beat their wives, not whip. But not too harshly. It depends on the society.
 
yeah....my grandpa used to bring his girlfriends home in front of my grandma......and if she used to get mad and told them to leave, he used to spank her :( sad, isnt it?
 
Have you ever heard of, "the rule of thumb"? It was the law in this country that you could beat your wife with a switch as long as it wasn't any thicker than the persons thumb who was beating his wife.
 
Yes, they really did beat their wives.

For that matter, the upper class could have lower class people whipped, even horsewhipped. Beating one's "lessers" was regarded as part of the privileges the upper class were afforded.
