Did an asteroid come near hitting the Earth a week ago?

For three nights, most recent 3-6-09, NBC comedian Jay Leno has made reference to a 7,000 ton asteroid coming with 21,000 miles of the Earth.

According to Leno, NASA discovered this NEO about 2-28-09.

I've neither heard or read anything on the news or in the paper about this.

Anybody know anything about this?
