did americans during the time of the revolutionary war have british accents?

since americans were part of the british empire up untill the revolutionary war, did they speak with british accents. also did they have the same way of blunt, somewhat tactless speaking that the british did (and still do). what I mean by this is if there was an american idol in 1774 would people have been offended if a british judge like simon made his cruel british remarks? or would they have felt that he was acting completely normal for a british/american person?
