Dictionary definitions don't help me understand the meaning of this word?

If someone uses the word 'distant' to describe another person, what does that usually mean? Dictionary definitions aren't useful because they just give you a list of synonyms which dont really have the same effect.

Can someone give me an explanation in ordinary terms of what 'distant' means in relation to a person or their behaviour?
