Dexter Show vs. Dexter Books?

How related are the books to show? In the series Dexter's Father Harry will randomly appear and talk to Dexter, Dexter will also have random flashbacks to his childhood with Harry as he teaches him "The Code". Does this happen in the books as well, and if so which book is it most seen in? Thanks
