I noticed you say that accutane helped clear up your flesh colored bumps. Were those bumps tiny, hidden underneath the skin and would only sometimes become a pimple, because I have these too. Is this the only type of acne you had when you started taking accutane? Were you doing anything preaccutane to help your acne or no?

I got a prescription for accutane, but am really apprehensive about taking it because I have been using a homeopathic medicine that has been helping me and I am thinking that things have probably been suppressed or something, so they will probably flare up once the accutane is started. I am also afraid of my flesh colored bumps turning into cysts or something. Did yours just dry up right away?

Hey CuriousP.... I think we have similar skin situations...I had the flesh colored bumps all over my face (except my forehead) and occasionally, I could tell that one of the bumps was getting irritated and would turn into a red pimple; it wasn't all that often that they became pimples though. They were under the skin, and they never ever came to a head or came out when I picked at them (which I never learned not to do... I knew it'd make a mess out of my face, but I kept on doing it!). My face didn't look so bad when you looked at me straight on, but if you caught me from the side, you could see the really bumpy texture of my skin. Do you have them on your upper cheeks? That's where I had a lot of them... also, I had them in the "hollows" of my cheeks a lot too. Also, do yours get worse if you try to exfoliate them? Mine would get so irratated when I would try to exfoliate my skin. Instead of flesh colored bumps, the next day they would be pinkish bumps. The redness would fade after a day or two.

This wasn't the only type of acne I had though. I would get big painful cysts. They were huge and impossible to cover up and just plain terrible. It's mainly the reason I went on accutane because I probably could have lived with the flesh colored bumps if it had just been them. I would have knots on my face though and you would just see a huge buldge in my skin. It was not pretty. I had a few blackheaRAB, but nothing really noticeable.

I had tried everything under the sun before accutane. I tried antibiotics, spironolactone, topicals, a million face washes, scrubs, peels, etc. Accutane was the only thing that ever worked. Some things helped more than others, but nothing would make the bumps go away. (Tazorac made them look even worse and more of them would turn into pimples.) Noxema Triple clean wash is awesome, kills the bacteria on your skin.

My bumps dried up almost immediately, but I noticed (this is gross, sorry) that many of them would just "fall out" of the pore. Like, where a bump had been a few days into accutane I started noticing flesh colored balls coming out of my pores. It was not bad and not noticeable to anyone other than me, because I'd get thisclose to the mirror to see how things were doing. Now my pores are sorta stretched out, but that's better than being bumpy. Oh, and the bumps did not become cysts (thank God) like you're worried about. I never had an initial breakout, but I think that was because my acne was not that bad. It was just the bumps and the cysts, but other than that I looked okay. If you're worried, maybe you could still do your homeopathic stuff, in conjunction with Accutane. That way you're fighting it on both enRAB. I really hope you find something that works for you and if you need any more help, just ask!

hey Dg

thank you, thank you, thank you for replying so quickly, I have been soo stressed out ever since I got the okay to go on accutane today from my derm, because I am getting mixed messages from different people as to what I should do. People think that accutane might not work on the tiny hard bumps (which btw are exactly like yours, I get them directly on the cheek and in the hollow). But talking with you has somewhat put me to ease as I do think that we have the exact same type of acne (i get those big cysts under the skin as well). So now I feel like I have at least some hope.

HOw long was your course for? and how many mg's were you on?
my doc wants me to go on 40mg for 4 months and up it to 60mg's if necessary.

how long was it before you cleared up completely?

Thanks again for your time!

just another question. Did you have extractions done at the derm's office while on accutane? My derm wants me to go in before I start my course and then again during the course, so he can 'help' take these things out, but it messes up your face man!! I have gotten it done before and it hurts, plus it leaves inflammation and hyperpigmentation.

Hey! Glad that I could help you out... this will have to be a really short reply, my grandfather died and I'm sorta busy with that at the moment, but this is a good distraction. Thanks! I need it.

I never had extractions at the derm's office. I did at an aestitician (spelling) office way before accutane and it made me so much worse. Maybe you could try the accutane without extractions first and see how that works. No sense in making the bumps get any larger or redder when they just may go away by themselves. If they're like mine, they'll just fall out on their own. My cysts went away immediately, but the bumps took about a month. It didn't get worse at all... just improved. I've been on it for 5 months at 40mg a day. It's helped me not be incredibly dry, like some of the others have complained about. My derm gave me the option of "weening" off the drug going down to 30mg, then 20, then 10mgs over the next three months and I think I'm going to do that, just as a precaution. If you have any more questions, I will certainly answer them as soon as I can...

I am reallly sorry to hear about your grandpa. Honestly, you didn't have to reply, but thanks so much for doing so I really appreciate it, and if it takes your mind off things well then you can write any time you please :)

I am on accutane 40mg/day. i have developed the same problem. mainly on the hollow of my left cheek and on a little on my forehead. i actually didnt have this problem before i started accutane, but it began about 2 weeks after i started. I think its part of my initial breakout... the medicine is brining everything up to the surface. Its driving me crazy because under sunlight it looks bumpy. i hate it. Im going to hawaii in a few days and im worried about all the bumps so im goin to try taking a few days off accutane. i accutally tried taking 2 days off the accutane to see if the bumps went down and they actually did go down some. so im trying not to worry too much about it i just dont want to get too behind on my accutane. i know for most it will get worst before it gets better but this worse part seems like its taking forever... i just cannot wait until my initial breakout is over. at least i havent had extremely bad breakouts yet, few here and there. but the good part is it really helped some of the dark acne scarring i had go away much faster. i think b/c it made my skin turnover faster. and my face used to get really oily, now i can go throughout the day w/o having to blot my face or apply powder. my face is actually too dry. like it feels sooo tight and i feel like i dont want to make too many facial expressions b/c im paranoid i have lots of wrinkles right now from the skin being too dry. im still worried to apply lots of lotions b/c im still early into the regimen and i dont want to break out a bunch from it. i hope things will be clearing up soon. ive taken 19 pills so far, skipping a few days in between when it gets bad. ive read as long as you take the full dose it doesnt really matter if you take it longer or do alot at one time to get it over with, but you get a bigger initial breakout. i felt my face was really great after the first week however. if i knew that was the case i would have started treatment later, so i would look great on my vacation. well i decided i will skip 4 days before my vacation and hope all those little bumps go back down. i think i got plenty of vit a in my system to keep me dry for a few days..
