Well here I am fixing to go see a family doctor for a possible kidney infection. It is a worst case scenario for me because I am facing a possible serious condition with no health insurance, and only 2K in my savings.
I lost my coverage last year due to a job layoff. Ironically, the job gave me a lot of stress, and I visited my doctor frequently for stress related chest pain, back pain, IBS, and an episode of gout.
Three months later, I was offered a state job in AR, and the benefits sounded great. Good cheap health coverage. Only one problem. I missed the enrollment period so I have to wait until next October. No problem, I'll just get my own coverage until then.
Well after two months of waiting with Arkansas Bluecross, my application was denied due to my medical history. Unbelievable. I am 35, no diabetes, don't smoke or drink, no chronic disease, my height is 6'2" and weight is 270. They said the combination of medical problems makes me a high risk.
Ten years ago, I walked into an insurance office, and walked out with immediate coverage. If you had medical problems, they were considered pre-exising, but your claim wouldn't be denied! Now you practically have to be very healthy to get coverage on your own.
And forget about the free clinics here. Most are only opened one day per month and booked solid for months.
So wish me luck as I go to the doctor today. I will be paying $200 bucks out of pocket at least for this visit.
