Delays to Marvel Films!

According to this article from Dark Horizons there might be a few delays with the releases of future Marvel superhero films:

"Marvel's plans for the superhero team-up film "The Avengers" to hit in the Summer of 2011 always seemed a bit too ambitious.

Today Marvel Studios has revised its plans for the release of its upcoming film properties into a more workable schedule. The downside? Two films are going to see year-long delays while the Summer of 2011 is going to have even more superheroes fighting it out than this past Summer.

The new schedule is as follows:

May 7th 2010: "Iron Man 2" (same date)

May 6th 2011: "Spider-Man 4" (just announced)
June 17th 2011: "Thor" (delayed a full year)
July 22nd 2011: "The First Avenger: Captain America" (delayed two months)

May 4th 2012: "The Avengers" (delayed ten months)

One of the big aims is that Marvel now has its flag permanently stamped on that first weekend of May to launch the Summer film season. They had "Spider-Man 3" in 2007, "Iron Man" last year, "Wolverine" this year, and now have sewn up that slot through til 2012.

The biggest surprise isn't "The Avengers" delay but rather "Thor". With the adaptation supposed to start filming in coming months, one wonders why a late Summer 2010 release still isn't on the carRAB unless things aren't progressing as fast as they should.

Also the Summer of 2011 is looking quite crowded there with the studio opening three films over the space of eleven weeks, while it's estimated that Warners will have the next "Batman" film out sometime that Summer as well - making it a more superhero dominated period than even last Summer."

Marvel seem to be struggling to get the balance with their films, and are going to have to be careful, or people are going to grow weary of them.

They really should move one of those films from 2011. But the problem is they have to introduce Thor and Captain America before they can do the Avengers film. I'd recommend bumping Captain America to the May slot in 2012 and then The Avengers to 2012. But then that raises the problem of getting people back to do the films and other issues such as where to slot in a probable Iron Man 3 and the already confirmed Spiderman 5.

Also, where is The Incredible Hulk going to fit into The Avengers film? I think he may be the villan, but who knows. Although the reboot with Ed Norton could be considered a flop (no sequel planned) it is good sometimes to just have stand alone films, rather than have everything turned into a franchise.

But has you said, Marvel pretty much have that 'first week in May' thing tied up, but they have done so for years.

So, yeah, it is a difficult balancing act for Marvel, and unfortunately, I think they're going to slip up at some point.

Well The Incredible Hulk is part of a franchise already what with certain connections that are being tied into the other Avengers films. It'll be fine if the Hulk doesn't get a second solo film (IMO) as the character will have other chances to appear in the Avengers series as cameos, supporting role or villain. Personally I would like to see Norton return as Bruce Banner only, and keep the Hulk for special appearances.

Anyway. I wonder if Ant-Man is going to be slotted in somewhere. That is supposed to have been in development for a long time now, I don't remember ever seeing any nes that it's been cancelled.

I like splitting Cap America and the Avengers more, so I'm not upset about that switch. But It does look cramped in 2011 overall. I seriously hope that these are going to be good.

I believe Edgar Wright has been working on an Ant-Man script for some time.

I agree with you about the splitting of Captain America and The Avengers. To have the same character in two films in the one year would be pushing it a bit.
