what is degenerative disc disease? I was diagnosed with this in the lurabar spine at L5-S1, L4- 5, L3-4.

As we age our bodies, our spinal disc undergo changes. The discs lose fluid which causes the discs to become thin, drier, and to narrow the spacing between the spinal levels. This can cause tears in the disc, bulges, ruptures, or fragments to break off.

What type of symptoms are you having?

Typically, they will offer:

*Physical therapy
*Oral SteroiRAB
*Anti-inflammatories
*Epidural shots
*Possible Tens Unit

Then in unresponsive cases, they may offer surgery for narrowing, herninations, etc.

Hope this helps and that you are not suffering to badly.

Thank you for the information on degeenrative disc disease. My pain exist from my back to all my lower extremeties and nurabness exist from time to time. Well, after today's appointment, I will be undergoing surgery; this will happen only if I decide to have it.
Again, Thanks!

vee27 - If you don't mind me asking, what type of surgery are you opting for? I to have DDD. I was first diagnosed about 20 yrs ago. Over the past 3 yrs my pain has become constant and daily. I take muscle-relaxants and narcotics just to get through the day. I have seen over 5 different surgeons to get their opinions. I've come to the conclusion that the one surgery that seems to make the most sense is also the one which my medical insurance won't pay for - a bi-level artificial disc replacement on my L4/L5 and L5/S1. The surgeons all generally agree that any type of fusion will only result in my needing further surgeries as the increased pressure on my other degenerating discs higher up my spine will begin giving way more rapidly. As you can tell I am very confused, which is why I'd be very interested in what your plans and thoughts are. In any event I wish you the best of luck, and I can certainly relate to what you are experiencing.
