Deciding between 2 makes - Mazda 3 OR Toyota Matrix & Yaris.?

Which of the 2 is better in performance reliability. I have driven a Toyota in the past i know that make well... BUT never a Mazda ?? I see plenty of Mazdas on the road these days so it has my curiousity peeked.... anyone out there ?? help with a bit of advise. PLEASE
 
we had used to have a mazda 5, but first we tested a mazda 3...they are really nice cars! one of my top choices if were to get a new car
