Public schooling is affected by having both sexes interact, and yes it does cause tension as well as a constant distraction; in the future though, when a child has become an adult would it not be better to already have a large range of experiences in relation to the opposite sex?
While an academic education is necessary to fully take advantage of ones future, without the socialization we go through during our education we will not be able to interact within our community later in life.
