Debating Between What Camera I should get?

Hey guys, I'm debating between two cameras. My primary use for it will be my high school photography class, and for taking pictures outside of class. My price range is under $200, so I am not interested in a digital SLR at this time (plus I'm still an amateur at best).

So, back to the point. I am debating whether to buy the Kodak Easyshare Z915 or the Canon Powershot A1100 IS (or any other camera that has 12 MP). The difference is that the Kodak is a 10 megapixel, 10x optical zoom camera; while the Canon is a 12 megapixel, 4x optical zoom camera. The difference in money isn't the go with?

Is it better to go with a camera with 2 less megapixels, but has a much greater zoom? Or will it be better to have the camera with 2 more megapixels?

The reason why I put it in photography was because I thought the megapixel vs zoom question would be better fitted for this category, rather than the consumer electronics section.

Thanks in advance :)

First of all, have you discussed what type of camera you will be required to use with the teacher of the photography class? Is this a digital or film class?

If it is film, you will be required to have a film SLR. If the class is digital then you may be able to get away with a bridge camera but you should ask the teacher first.

I like the 12 megapixil as a plus

UNLESS - you really need a large zoom. If your pictures are all going to be relatively close-up you don't need a 10X zoom. A 4X zoom still allows you to be not uncomfortably close to your subject and you have the added megapixils for a more sharp picture.

SO - if your subjects are going to be at a far distance then you really would benefit from the 10X zoom.

It really depends on what your photograph subject is going to be, but for me I don't use my zoom all that much. I stay comfortably away from my subjects and use the wider field to keep them more at ease. I zoom if I want a close face shot, but then a 4X would still allow that.

See below for what I have. Being the photographer I am, I would take the 4X with extra megapixils as I do not shoot objects at a distance all that much. Besides I really prefer Canon to Kodak.

Have fun with your photography. It is an amazingly rewarding hobby.

As the previous poster said make sure your photography class will accept it. A very large portion of high school photography classes require the use of a film SLR, and $200 will get you an excellent film camera and some lenses.
