I am a high school student who is doing an extension history corse. Part of this is a 300 word essay on anything really. I need to basically pick a particular event, personality etc; that is controversial and basically has enough historians to give me ammo for a debate that i can present and then make a judgment on.

For example, one of my friends is doing the invasion of Iraq by President Bush, while another is focusing on how the Black death contributed to the peasent revolt of medieval england.

..so any ideas? Particular areas i enjoy, include Martin Luther.. and anything to do with his period.. and the orientalistt debates between said and bernard are also interesting.. but i need it to be a specific q.

Please, any assistance would be... amazing.

One lively debate is whether the US bombing Japan to end the war was necessary, and whether more casualties would have been sustained by invading Japan. You should be able to find many sources on both sides of this issue.

Well if you like the late Medieval period into the Renaissance and cite Martin Luther then perhaps you have a bit of knowledge about King Henry VIII and his break from Rome. Now on one level this may seem like a played over bit but I assure you that the surface has barely been scratched.

One of my favorite personalities is Anne Boylen. Recent movies as well as lurid books paint her an empty headed sl^t who seduced a King but if you examine the historical record you will find that Anne Boylen and her family were well on the path to rebelling against Rome long before Anne met Henry. My argument, bolstered by research, is that Anne had much more influence upon Henry's desicion to break with Rome and it had much more to do than her desire to become Queen and bear a Royal Heir and a spare.

With the story of Henry & Anne you can attack several notions;
A) Had Catherine of Aragon popped out a living male heir and a spare would Henry have sought a divorce.
which leads to B) Had Henry begotten a son by Catherine and not broken with Rome, would England have achieved Greatness (arguably England became the stronger nation by throwing off Rome while Spain and other 'Catholic' countries slid into the toilet)...

C) How influential was Anne in prompting Henry to break with Rome - - - not the issue of divorce, though that played a part, but more importantly telling Henry that England ought to be free of Rome - -- -- many an Englishman and especially Nobles such as the Boylens were tired of giving their money to support Rome and its increasingly debauched Cardinals & Priests....

With the Tudors and the English of the Tudor Era you have strong vivid personalities - - - and action - - - War with France, War against the Church, betrayals, lust, the fate of England - - - !!

Good Luck - - - - --- Peace/////////\\\\\\

(Note // had Catherine begat a male brat or two she still most likely would have predeceased Henry... Imagine Henry taking on a seond wife and spitting out another set of boys!Then there would have been a fight Royal.
Oh, and without Anne Boyley there would have been no ELizabeth Tudor the First arguably England's greatest monarch - - - another great subject for your project. Elizabeth her troubled youth, conflict with sister Mary, her near miraculous rise to power!)
