I have a pro's vs con's debate assignment on how prepared the US is for an outbreak of a pandemic disease and I'm having a hard time thinking of things to argue about.
The assignment is: Attack factual accuracy in the statement, “the US is ill prepared for an outbreak of a potentially pandemic disease”
I researched what, if any, current pandemic diseases there are and it appears to be HIV/AIDs and Influenza A, specifically the H1N1 strand. To make sure I stay on topic, my argument will be focused on this list and how the US handled these viruses so far.
I'm on the pro side so I need to prove that the US is prepared for a pandemic disease outbreak, but so far I only have one argument. The debate is set up like a real court case so I don't know what arguments the other team will be using and in all honesty I can't think of any they may use. What would be some possible arguments the other team may use to try and persuade the class jury that the US is ill-prepared for a pandemic disease outbreak? Also, what would be some points I could argue to show the US is prepared?
I've done a good amount of research on the topic and have found 2 pieces of evidence I can use to show how the US is prepared for a pandemic disease outbreak. I've found the Governments current plan for handling a pandemic disease outbreak, and suggested plans for families, businesses, and individuals and plan to use these lists as my main proof of how prepared we are. One is the lists about how to be prepared for pandemic flu outbreak provided by the Government and the other piece of evidence is a new influenza vaccine development. Does anyone have any ideas of things I could use to persuade the class jury we (the US) are prepared for a pandemic disease outbreak? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
