debate on governments promoting family values?

i have a debate in school coming up and the prompt is "the federal government should enact policies to promote family values." now i have the negative side, saying we should mantain the status quo. not knowing what my opponent was going to say, i came up with arguments showing how it is un-american, nonconstitutional and just all in general bad. so i thought i had it wrapped up untill my opponent told me today that his argument went to the point of saying that maintaining the status quo would lead to a nuclear ice age, and saying they were gonna enact policies to promote family time, not the exact policies. my thought is to agree we need a change, but argue the government shouldn't be doing it. any back up help or is that about good?
 
It is NOT the Government's job to "promote family values". Family values comes from each individual family itself, whether it has both parents, divorced parents, or a single head of house hold. Government telling families how to "conduct" their morals and values??? Very unamerican,
 
I think it's wise to focus on the part of the statement that talks about the government enacting policies, rather than focusing on what family values are or why they are valuable.
 
it is not the government's job to "promote" family values. Whose family values are they going to promote? What if those values go against what your family values are?
How is the government going to do this? What if the family doesn't have the specified time for "family time" due to work or other obligations? Is the government going to pay people to stay home to have family time.
Government needs to read the constitution and stick to it !
