hey, i've got to give a very convincing debate tomorrow on why im against capital punishment and i need some ideas- good ones.
Please give me a few pointers if you can help!!! xxxx
 
If capital punishment is a deterrant why are homicides rates rising?

Where is the justice when an innocent person is executed?

(Since 1973, 95 people on death row have been released after having been found wrongfully convicted).

Why are a disproportionate number of indigent and minorities sentenced to death compared to murderers of a different social status and race.

(2003 stats..White victims account for 1/2 of all murder victims, 80% of those convictions result in the death penalty. During 2003 12 white defendants were executed for the killing of black vitims, 178 black defendants were executed for the killing of white victims.)

How do Christians rationalize their pro death penalty stand when it comes to agape?

What about the financial burden to the taxpayers?

(For example, Ted Bundy was on death row for 10 years before he was executed the cost to Florida taxpayers was more than 6 million dollars.)Why is the rate of violent crime lower in countries without the death penalty.
 
Off the top of my head -

1) our government should not be given the power to put to death its own citizens.

2) 19 people in the last year have been released from prison serving 20+ years and/or death row sentences in Dallas alone because they where wrongly convicted.

3) the aspects of an investigation and the evidence is greatly influenced those collecting it. These means that preconceived ideas can sway evidence.

4) The cost of housing an inmate is less than putting them to death.

5) It is better to release or spare the life of 10 to prevent the death or wrongful conviction of 1 innocent.

6) Speeding the process to save money guarantees the death of innocent people.

7) cost is not a relevant factor when debating the life of a person.

8) Those who murder and have higher paid attornys are better protected than those who cannot afford attornies (fact) The poor are put to death while the rich are not...Justice???

9) The death penalty is no a deterant.

10) texas puts to death more people than any country in the world. Even more than Sadaam did. If texas the safest place on earth....no.
