So my brother in-law and I are in a debate about Hurricanes. He says that after the Hurricane hits land it dissipates so fast its not a Hurricane anymore because it needs water to maintain its strength. Now I agree with some of what he says. Hurricanes need warm water among many other things to keep it's strength up, but, I say that a Hurricane that is say cat 3 or higher, can maintain a Hurricane status pretty far inland. Whether I'm right or wrong we need this settled and links would be great because if I'm right, he isn't going to believe me unless I have proof. 10 points to the best answer with links. Oh and I tried looking for info but maybe I wasn't searching in the right place your help will be very much appreciated.
We live in NC 200 miles or so inland. He is trying to say that we don't have anything to worry about when it comes to a Hurricane. That by the time it got to us it wouldn't be one anymore. Which could be true but I think if its strong enough it could still be a Hurricane if it came inland toward us.

Hurricanes need heat and water. Even if it makes landfall over a swamp, it will still dissipate quickly due to lack of heat.

The distance the hurricane persists overland is determined by it's surface area and contact with tropical waters. A hurricane cannot persist if it is entirely on land, it needs to keep "one foot in the water" so to speak.
