Death Proof is crap (Minor Spoilers)

Th3 3nD...

45 minutes of girls talking, getting killed in a car crash, more talking, idiotic scene with no explanation, crap ending, no plot, no insight into Kurt Russells character, I want that 110 minutes of my life back.

I am sure Empire magazine loved every minute of it and gave it 5 stars

was it not a double bill with Planet Terror and called Grindhouse in the states

I take it you didn't like it. obvious question, was there any flesh on show and how was the gore factor, compared to the likes of Wolf Creek and Hostel etc?

Talk about missing the point?!

Death Proof and Planet Terror were both superb, funny pastiches of early 70's exploitation B movies, done brilliantly. They even have some cross-over references which help if you watch Death Proof first, then Planet Terror... one after the other.

I suppose the fact that Death Proof is kind of a "woman's movie" might put you off? The conversations were brilliant and had real depth.

The conversations had no depth, and all the characters just talked like every other character in every other Quentin Tarrantino movie.

It really was an awful movie.

Gotta disagree with almost all of your posting. They were pastiches, yes, but how were they brilliant exactly? They certainly weren't funny. I saw no conversations of any depth, revelations or insight; in fact I can hardly recall any exchanges between the characters at all, which is bizarre for a QT film.

Tarantino's only real misfire IMO.

I would have to agree with chris_sw.

It's almost as if QT got lost in his own "coolness". Homage to whatever, fine, it just really was a load of balls.

Unless you know the purpose of the film.....youve every right to complain. This movie isnt for the general movie public. Its for fans of the genre and if you compare it to other famous films in this genre, this movie ticks all the right boxes. It was never intended to be a box office hit.It was never catered to the critics. Its a spit in the face to all those who love big action blockbuster movies, and lap it up like a dog laps crumbs off the floor.

And believe me.......theres plenty of them out there lol.Even on this forum.

There is only one purpose behind any and every film: to engage and entertain its audience. It failed, so we're complaining.

I bet QT & Miramax were hoping for a big hit. While critically, the film has had overwhelmingly positive reviews, I didn't find it a spit in the face to those who love big action blockbuster movies, it was just a very thin script. This was supposed to be a slice of exploitation cinema, and in this genre, the rule is: give us something sexy or violent every few minutes. In huge chunks of Death Proof, very little happened. Scene after scene meandered pointlessly, the characters talking seemingly only for the sake of filling up screentime.

There is only one true sin that a film can commit, and Death Proof did it. It was dull.

I really liked it, I didn't expect to but there you go, I loved the dialogue which I think QT does brilliantly, I do wish that they had released the two films together or perhaps I should have waited to watch them this way!

I really enjoyed it aswell.

The dialogue lacked some of the wit and sharpness of QT's previous films, but I still found it amusing to listen to. I thought the casting was excellent too. Vanessa Ferlito was a refreshing change from the norm of leading(ish) ladies. Kurt Russell was on top form aswell. And as for Zoe Bell... I think I'm in love!

Admittedly, it's not Tarantino's finest work. But then, it was never intended to be your average standalone Tarantino flick.

Here's hoping we get the true Grindhouse experience on DVD in the UK soon!

You are right about that.
I saw it in it's original state and even though I am a big fan of the 50's B movies I absolutely hated Deathproof because of it's complete lack of anything to redeem it.
I did however find Planet Terror to be an excellent example of completely OTT movie making and the one legged girl with a machinegun prosthetic was brilliant.
IMO you should give Deathproof a wide berth and just watch Planet Terror instead.
