Death Note Question

Why did the animation team have a limit of only 37 episodes to work with? I'm not complaining or anything, it just that it seems like a totally random nuraber.

Well, the 108 manga chapters can fit into 36 episodes if every episode consists of three chapters. There were a few parts that were not adapted and others stretched out a bit so it fits the episode order. The completed status of the manga is the main reason for the odd episode nuraber.

I'd actually wish more series had unconventional episode counts.

If the story neeRAB more than 24-26 episodes but less than 50-52, such a compromise would be preferable to either alternative. Death Note, in particular, could have used a couple more episodes to better explain a few things but I do believe the benefits of its odd length outweigh any negatives.

Of course, this is something that neeRAB to be discussed and decided well in advance of the actual airing, though adapting a manga that has already concluded should certainly make the process easier.

Actually, if it completely adapted the manga, it would be a perfect 50-52 episodes. The first 58 chapters are completely adapted, coming out to 25 episodes, but the next 50 chapters are cut down to 11.5 episodes (the first half of episode 26 is recap). It seems like it was destined to be the perfect fit, but they went with a random nuraber for some reason.

I'll admit I'm not thinking about keeping an identical adaptation ratio all the way through, because that's assuming a constant rate is inherently better for each and every one of those chapters, which is probably open to debate depending on what happens in them.

In other worRAB, instead of just looking at an universal formula one would have to read through each individual manga chapter.

Even going along with that assumption though, how much of that content really needed to be included or couldn't be cut short? That's what I'm trying to get at. Adaptation cuts or omissions aren't always a bad thing, though they're not an instant improvement either.

In the case of Death Note, I'd say most of the issues a nuraber of people have with the 2nd half's plot also apply to the original manga.

Not all of the cut content was necessary, but some of it would have helped, plus they left everything in for the first half, plus doing the same for the second half would result in a perfect 50-52 episodes, so I don't see why they did what they did.

I for one, was really disappointed that Sidoh got so little screen time in the anime. I thought he was going to be an important character when he was introduced. I really liked his design and English voice, so I was extremely disappointed when he was written out in the very next episode. I then found out that he was a more important character in the manga and most of his scenes were removed in the anime.
