First of all, I have nothing against the Chinese and China - and neither about the recent Tibet protest.

Sports should be non-political

However, I realise that many Chinese from China do not really know or understand English. The signs available in China also written in Chinese characters

I also got to meet many Chinese nationals who work in Singapore (as sales assistants/ waiters/ waitresses/ bus drivers) and they don't really know English.

Some have different accent and pronunciation....

So I wonder if the non-Chinese athletes and spectators will be able to ask for help in China (in case they are lost somewhere and need to ask locals for directions)

Therefore, I think to BE SAFE, those who plan to visit China (eg: to watch the Olympics) MUST learn Mandarin (both conversational and written)

Or perhaps, Olympics can be postponed to a later date (perhaps to other places that are English-friendly) as English is an universal language

what are your opinions?

no, its not a good place....not only will there be distractions because of tibet and the relations/human rights problems, but also the air. many of the runners arent running their best because of the terrible, polluted chinese air

Although I am not going to China to see the Olympics. I do hope the Chinese government will make it English friendly for the reasons you stated. Also I would think they would take it as an insult if the Olympics were postponed or change to a different country.

The chinese government has had eight years to address the issues that were raised with regard to their history of human rights abuse. They have not complied and now they have the honour of hosting the olympic games. This honour should not have been given until they had proved they were going to clean up their act The oppression suffered by the Tibetan people is appalling and we should all be calling for an immediate boycott of the games. I am sorry for the individual athletes whose participation would be cancelled but in the great scheme of things it would be the right thing to do. By the way I think this question with regard to language barriers is a very minor issue. Wouldnt you agree ?
