dealer vs. owners manual

Called my dealer service department today to inquire about $ for 5000 mile service. The guy ask if I wanted Syn or dino quoted "about $270". I ask him to list services performed and in the list was to change oil in all 3 holes. When I stated the owners manual listed only the engine oil needed chg he said "the owners manual is a little thin and we rec'd changing all oil cause oil is cheap". Who out there changes all 3 holes every 5000 miles. Are these guys just inflating there price ? He also insisted that the engine oil needed chg every 2500 miles. All previous bikes I have followed manf rec'd intervels and never had a problem ( BMW ) I run 90% highway / 10% street.

Always change all 3 every 5k myself. This 15k between tranny change and 10k between primary (or what ever is currently being recommended) seems too long.

The transmission oil always looks new, but I change all three because it is easier to keep track and if there was a problem, I might identify it sooner by seeing metal on the magnet or change in oil condition. $270.00 is not a bad price compared the the $360.00 that my dealer wants, assuming they do more than just change the fluids.

I do engine every 2500 with syn. Trans and Primary every 5k with formula+. I do pretty much the rest of the checks and adjustments in the service manual every 5k as well.
It may be overkill, doing it myself isn't anywhere close to $270.

Change it yourself, easy enought. Your primary and tranny should be good. Use your regular owners manual to show ya. use synthetic oil. Engine 5,000. Primary 10,000 Tranny 20,000 especially if you drive mostly higway.

Amsoil, engine at 5,000-7,000 and primary, tranny every other change. Works just fine and not that hard to remember. But as always "do what makes you feel best" thats what its all about.
