I am trying to get in to the Interpreter Training Program at my school (for ASL interpretation). During our interview, one of the questions will pertain to situations in which you may come across a deaf person and a hearing person who may be having trouble communicating. For example; you know a little sign, you're not certified. You're in the grocery store and you see two strangers, one deaf and one hearing. They are trying to communicate, but it's proving to be difficult. Knowing a little bit of ASL you want to help, but you know that in Deaf culture it's often considered rude to extend help when it comes to language and communication. What is the best way to handle the situation? Walk away, or enter the conversation? If so, how? What about in other situations such as emergencies? Say you're in a hospital with no interpreter on staff and you see someone who is having issues communicating? Or a car accident involving a hearing person and a deaf person?
Thanks!
