Dead Poet's Society: Does Keating deserve the final salute from the boys?

At the end of the movie, all the boys from the group stand on their desks and gives Keating their final salute. Do you think Keating deserve it and explain why you think so. Im curious about what you guys have to say. thanks!
 
I just watched that movie about two weeks ago.

If he were my teacher yes I would have stood on that
desk and said;

O captain, my captain,
for it is simple
he gave to them a gift
called........
freedom to express
not worrying
rate or grade
but the words
that you find in
yourself
challenge yourself
and.........
seize the day.
