'Dead' Iphone - switches off when it shouldnt (is charged)?

My Iphone was on 80% charge yesterday, I left it for about an hour, and went I went to use it, it was dead?

I later charged it, and today it was on 100% charge but died again? I have done a reboot (held down the home and on/off key for 10 secs) and it has came back on, and is saying 50% charged??

Why did it go off??
 
my iphone has been the same this is the second one ive had and am taking it back again to the shop were i got it from, today it was fully charged then turned its self off and wont go back on the light comes on when i hold the on button but goes straight back off.
