[h=3]By DAMIAN PALETTA[/h]President Barack Obama on Monday will announce his intent to nominate Clinton administration veteran Sylvia Mathews Burwell to be his new budget chief, a senior administration official said.
Ms. Burwell is a veteran of budget battles, having worked in top posts inside the Clinton administration's White House, budget office and Treasury Department. She will be nominated to become director of the Office of Management and Budget, a key policy-making slot that has broad influence in tax and spending proposals.
Since leaving the Clinton administration, she has held a number of senior roles, including as president of the global development program for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She is currently president of the Walmart Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the giant retailer.
Reuters reported Sunday that Mr. Obama would nominate Ms. Burwell.
When in the Clinton administration, Ms. Burwell worked closely with current Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew and a number of other members of Mr. Obama's economics team. OMB hasn't had a Senate-confirmed director since January 2012, when Mr. Lew left OMB to become White House chief of staff.
OMB officials have been busy preparing the White House's budget proposal for the fiscal year that begins in October. The budget report was due in February but has been delayed because of all the changes in the tax code that were part of the January fiscal-cliff negotiations.
