It is claimed that Irish republican dissidents are to target the Tory party during the Conservative party conference in October and it is feared that David Cameron will be at risk of an assassination attempt.
Tory MP Patrick Mercer said he had received information that resurgent republican paramilitaries wanted to "seize the news headlines" by attacking targets on the mainland. Laurence Robertson, the Conservative chairman of the Northern Ireland Select Committee, said suggestions of an attack on the mainland were "extremely worrying".
"So far it has been contained to the province but whether it is there or on the mainland it is very worrying," he told The Observer.
"We hope it is not yet another chapter but it could be and has to be dealt with."
