Datebk 6

I just received an email from Pimlico stating that a preview of Datebk 6 has been posted at the Pimlico site. This is something I have anxiously been waiting for. I haven't downloaded it yet, but plan to do it soon. I will comment once I have tried using it.

The message said this is a very early release, so there may be stability problems running the program on older devices. The readme file says there will be a free upgrade for those who registered Datebk 5 after January 1, 2005. The upgrade prices have not been announced yet. However, if the current upgrade policy remains in force, it will cost $10 for registered Datebk 5 users and $15 for earlier versions.

Looking at the list of new features, it looks like the biggest changes include the addition of a Today screen and an alarm manager.

Here is a download link to the 45 day trial.

I downloaded and installed DateBk6 but the zip file your address links to does not have the dbsetup for the help file. How can I get it?

By the way, the upgrade is awesome!!

The dbsetup will probably be included in the final release. I am not quite sure why the web site for Datebk6 has not been set up yet, unless they are waiting until the final version is ready to be released. You should be able to get it with the Datebk5 download.

I have been testing out the program today and it seems very stable on my T3. The Today screen lets you have access to the details of the items being shown. It also shows the moon phases. The new version is not bloated and seems to run quickly. Overall, I am happy with this upgrade. I will probably get the upgrade once the Pimlico web site starts selling the program.

I'm running mine on a TX. Everything has been running fine except for a soft reset I have not been able to duplicate. I configured DateBk6 to run the today screen with the hard calendar botton and I configured the display soft-button options in the lower left corner to include the custom view (the diamond). I then invoked Datebk6 with the hard button and tapped on the custom view. When I selected one of my custome views, the Palm went into a soft reset. I've tried to duplicate the error and it has not occured.

Other than that incident, everything has been running fine. This is well worth the upgrade from DateBk5.

The link is the only way to get it.....CESD is limiting the pre-releases to be certain not to get too overwhelmed with bug reports etc.

The program is very stable. Size is just under 900K without any help files or icon sets.

I've been running DB6 on my T5 since Friday when the first release was made and each subsequent release to the current v3 he has added a new feature each time.

In the month view - you can now see "text" in the event field or ToDo field. Albeit small but you can see it.

There are 2 files now a part of the download. The main PRC and then a subsequent prc that contains the moon phase information that's on the ToDay screen.

In looking at the program - expect this Today screen to be able to launch two other applications besides your email program. There is some preference settings referring to it but no documentation yet.

On the surface - it's added some other functions as well but no wireless services.

Been playing with it on my T2 with no problems. One thing to be said. If Pimlico, and Iambic keep coming out with nice programs, may be the guys over at pdaperformance will wake up and release Life@Hand.

Yes - both Iambic and Pimlico have nice programs. Datebk6 is still a good calendar replacement program. If Pdaperformance were ever to come out with Life@Hand and it had everything it was supposed to have based upon 24 months (it was announced in Jan of 2004) ago then it might give Agendus a run for it's money.

Agendus is a contact manager, calendar, task, and wireless interface.

Datebk5 (6) is an excellent calendar replacement program.

Life@Hand is true vaporware, at the moment. Parker orginally was suppose to release a beta on Dec. 17th, 2004 and then delay after delay with a final "we are scraping it" until we can get the code down to a manageable size.....

It may be in alpha somewhere but my guess is that it's vaporware completely.

I totally agree. I really like Agendus. I am waiting to see what is around for the new year in Palms. I would like to get the new treo, but with the windows operating system, we will have to see. The datebk6 is a great calendar replacement program. I find that I do not use it to its fullest. With Agendus it offers so much more, but it would have been great to have another choice with Life@Hand. One thing is for sure, I can hide a palm from my wife better than a guitar. Guitar Picker. ;)

I'm also using Datebk6 on my T|X, and love it!

I had not installed Datebk5 after getting my TX, figuring I'd stick with the built in datebook for a while. Once Datebk6 came out, I gave it a try and really like it!

Now I'm just waiting for the next release, p4!!!

I know for a fact that Shimon (from ShSh) is working with Mr. Dewar on a plug-in for 4cast to work with dateBk6 !!! How exciting is that? I told him he should do one for 4stocks too! i'd love to see the plug-in out TODAY ..........but I'm afraid they may wait until the final release so as not to confuse the issue any more than it already is.

A new preview of Datebk 6 has been posted at

http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/datebk6-v60a-p4-preview.zip

The email I received about this release included the following remarks:

Note that there are a lot of fixes here. In particular, this should
clear up ALL issues relating to the use of repeat ToDo's created in
Datebk5 - a significant issue that was causing resets when people
tried to modify repeat TODO's created previously. The tag field
calculations were off by one byte in that case (in order to provide
on the fly backwards compatibility, Datebk6 manages over two dozen
different tag formats around the place - quite a nightmare to do
this, but it sure benefits the end user no end to provide this type
of transparency when upgrading).

I also found the problem with birthdays causing index out of range
errors and fixed that too. Note that birthdays should be entered
with the REAL date of birth for best results as Datebk6 will display
the age of the person in all views if you do that. Also, there is a
glitch in the current P4 release that if you put someone's birthday
in the future (actually impossible if you think about it), Datebk6
will not display it. Since people do this because they don't want to
bother with setting the correct birth year, P5 will take care of
that. I also hope to fix the birthday details dialog in Datebk6 so
you can change the date directly as that has the much better Datebk6
date selector which allows you to just key in the year rather than
press the left arrow 56 times to get to the person's year of birth!!

NOTE: you will need to reset your popup lists when you install this
release: go into POPUP LIST SETTINGS and tap RESET button, then
select TODOS and tap it again. This was necessary due to some
internal changes in the popup lists and the addition of a couple of
extra items.

These two seem to offer similar features.

What does Datebk do that Agendus doesn't? &

What does Agendus do that Datebk doesn't?

The real weakness with Agendus is that it has become so bloated that it is difficult for Iambic to find and fix bugs quickly. Many issues have cropped up as new devices have been released. Datebk has maintained a small and simple footprint to avoid many of the bugs found in the Agendus program.

The real strength in Agendus is it's contact management features and straight forward interface. It also has custom views and integration with email and SMS applications.

Datebk handles time zone appointments and time zone jumping. Agendus does not support time zone jumping. Also, Datebk allows appointments to span midnight. Datebk has a lot more free updates released on a regular basis. If you purchase Agendus, get the subscription service because Iambic has a reputation of charging its customers for each of its frequent upgrades. With the subscription, you pay once and get many upgrades at no extra charge for one year.

It looks like some great new features in this new version. However this link doesn't appear to work anymore :( - is there an updated version been posted

Alternatively if not can someone post the zip file that this link pointed to? or pm me to email it?
