does anyone know if nextels data service plan with unlimited web work if you have a http browser or will that cost more. also does that plan give you unlimited instant messanger? i am thinking of upgrading my plan to this. just curious to see if anyone has had any use for it. does the instant messanger work good? or do you need to download a instant messenger program for it to really work. i currently have a i730 phone. thanks

As for does the instant messanger work good? or do you need to download a instant messenger program for it to really work.:

There are now 3 IM programs NEXTEL allows users to use that are preloaded in the NEXTEL online pages. You do not need to download the programs. They are 1) AIM, 2) Yahoo! Messenger, 3) MSN Messenger. They all work well, but only AIM will give you Net Alerts when you receive a new message unless you tweak around in WebJal or MyJal which are separate "at your own risk" mod programs... Your phone comes with the Openwave WAP microbrowser installed. This is the main way to access all of the pages you visit. Using the programs (WebJal/MyJal) above, you can download other "at your own risk" HTTP/HTML clients for browsing, however, you are limited to the memory on the SIM card as to how elaborate of a program you can use for Net browsing.

Any plan that allows you use of the IM programs, allows you unlimited use of them as it's the service provider who will be tracking your usage. NEXTEL has no way to determine this, nor do they intend to use one. The only extra charges I could see is if you pick up a rate plan that doesn't include unlimited text messaging as AIM will burn you if you receive too many Net Alerts via messages received. There is a way to shut this off in the Preferences of AIM. That will cure that problem.

FROM MY VIEW:

NEXTEL is trying to rake in some of the cash the others are taking in from text messaging. NEXTEL used to have dozens of different unlimited text messaging plans for NOL, but now they have scaled back to just 3 plans total with only one having unlimited text messaging... you guessed it... the most expensive one. Most of the items they have could probably be bought out piecemeal, but would be more costly. It's not often that they do it, but I signed on to a NOL Messaging Plan in Feb. of 2002 that for $10/mo. allows unlimited AIM (now I have unlimited Yahoo! & MSN as well), the 80 standard websites, and the unlimited text messaging. Don't hold your breath, but if one of these comes up, jump on it as the plan I have never expires nor do the 100 bonus mins. I got for signing up for it. The only way to lose the mins. and plan are obviously, you stop paying for it... then you'll kick yourself in the ass for doing that.

SPECIAL TRICK:

If you don't have "Enter Site" capabilities on your phone from the NOL homepage, text to yourself the link http://www.google.com. This will allow you to click on the link, open the Google page, enter a URL, and go to that URL using Google's own web browsing HTML program which is much better than Openwave.

thanks that was very helpful. i am new to all this cellphone technology. i get on the internet alot to see sports scores/stocks/email and also AIM. i have been playing around with my phone trying to get AIM on there.

how do you get it on your phone. or is it already loaded on it?

They are not per se "loaded" on your phone. The software is on NEXTEL's servers to which you connect from your phone directly as a "network" application. This is so NEXTEL can give you access or take it away. You have to do nothing. The links will appear under E-Mail & IM on your Net Menu when the service is activated.

i can go under IM and log on to AIM but none of my buddy names are there. is that becuase i dont have a data service plan and i just have a regular voice plan? sorry if these seem like dumb questions this is just all very new to me. everytime i call nextel i get different answers from different people. very frustrating.

You need to speak with 1badss. You have surpassed my knowledge on that one. It is my belief that is a BlackBerry specific program. You might get it to run in Java Apps through MyJal/WebJal if you are clever enough to get it to install through one of them.

As far as the IM service goes, you need to configure your preferences on the web for a mobile buddy list. I have mine set up to recognize the 1st 10 buddies on my regular list as buddies on my mobile list. I think 10 is a predetermined limit set by AOL for mobile contacts. You can also add buddies through your phone via AIM's menus.

ya i have no idea where my sub id is. i am sure i could find it if i really tried but i am sure you know right where its at. thanks for the info. i wont have my i730 phone for long will be upgrading soon.

Go to net under menu and go to nextel.com. then go to sub id and send me the number, just the number it will be 10 numbers a dash then 8 numbers
