Data plans

I just found the importance of a data plan. Anyone who complains about being forced to have one should stop! It really is a necessity.

Put it this way, I ran a data check on my device and in the 3 or so days I've had my DROID, I've used 2,000 MB and counting...that's a HUGE amount...and it just keeps growing.

Why?

Every app I have is constantly connected to the network performing actions and receiving updates. I also love the internet on the device. I use MEEBO IM, which uses data not SMS.

Every little thing you do will use data. If you were to choose not to use the data...odds are you will...even by accident.

Have to say those are good points, and at a typical .02 per KB the bill for your use would be insane.

On the other hand the costs for data plans is also insane, and though not as bad as the pay per use I can only assume that any company with as many captive customers as the large US cell companies (at or near 100 mil x so many lines per account) would love to be able to find a way to increase billing to such a large portion of their customer base for something that basically has no additional cost to the company for its use.

Simple math 100 mil x a conservative 40% on data = 40 mil+ lines x $30 = $1.2 billion in additional income per month, and this does not include those account with multiple data plans for additional lines etc.

I do realize that this may not be an accurate number as not all data plans are the same costs, but with such high numbers of subscribers any small increase in billing adds up to a whole lot of dollars.

Also as I have explained to my carrier the $30 is hard to swallow since I receive nearly 50mps from my cable internet provider for a similar fee, and that 5000mb (more than my typical monthly use) is equal to 100 minutes or just over 3 hours cable modem use.

So just what are we getting for that $30?

Also are you not sure your not looking at KB use and not MB? That sounds like a lot of data for a short time.

Anyhow be sure to tell your cell company that your cable company offers thousands of times more download capacity for a similar cost, and also that no phone out there today can fully reproduce the multimedia experience of your 18" laptop, or 24" PC monitor so just where is the value.

If enough of us do that they will eventually get the idea, and data costs will drop like a rock (hopefully)
