just last week on tv there was a lecturer from the school of linguistics at the university of zambia. he pointed out to one danger cellphone are likely to bring - degrading of proper spellings. because of the following factors 1) limited screen space 2)need to be as fast like one is speaking 3) to save money, mostly young people have learnt to use short form spelling. this discourages the use of proper spellings which might also lead to students using them in exams and most examiners never accepts such spellings which inturn results into low grades to students. i have talked just on this topic because i have alread noticed that cynthia above has already discussed most of these.
