I am 27 and I played sports all my life. I wrestled, swam, did long distance running and I never had a problem with my knees, ever. A few years back I discovered ballroom dancing and I fell in love with it. I started focusing on competitive Latin dancing and everything was going fine. Then, one fateful night I went to a social dance like I have done many times before, but this time the floor was particularly sticky and when I planted my left foot on the floor as I was doing a left turn, my foot got sort of stock and I rotated my left knee. I felt a very slight pinching sensation that I could also describe it as mini electric shock or impulse. And that was it, No bid deal, but I was a little surprised because I never experienced any weird pinching sensation from dancing in my knee before.

I sat down and I felt a very slight sensations on the left side off center of my knee cap. I did not know what to think of it, and that was basically it. No pain walking or anything like that the next day. So I continued with my dance training and everything was fine at first, but a few days later as I was doing Samba rolls (this movement involves stepping forward with your left foot and then rotating your body counter clock wise, a 180 degrees turn.) I noticed that the uncomfortable sensation reappeared. I did not think much of it at first and continued with my training. I finally realized that something was wrong when I went on my usual 4 mile run and suddenly on I noticed a slight uncomfortable pain in the middle of my knee below the knee cap as I was just about done with the run. Mind that I ran marathons before and never ever experienced anything remotely close. Anyways, this sensation of pain below my knee cap started to intensify with successive runs and dance training sessions and it finally got to the point where I would experience slight uncomfortable pain after walking for about a mile. During my dance practices the uncomfortable pain was now affecting my knee all around (sometimes left side, then right side, then below the knee cap extending all the way to the shin)
It got me really worried and I went to emergency room, this was three weeks after I rotated my left knee. They did not find anything other than slight swelling in the knee cap area, for which they prescribed the ibuprofen to take the swelling off. I waited 10 days and then went back to dancing, my uncomfortable pain has subsided, it seemed, but it returned just as quickly. I finally went to see the orthopedic Doctor at the Veterans Hospital Clinic. He ordered X-rays, it showed nothing, he examined my knee and did not find anything wrong with it. He told me I had no tears and I did not need an MRI. He said that I had a small muscle tissue injury and that it would heal on its own and that I could just walk it off. So I went back to dancing and reassured that it would heal on its own and that I would be O.K for the College wrestling season. as well. I bought a huge knee brace that I would put on during dance classes and I even managed to win a competition with my partner, but my pain has not retreated and I finally decided to stop dancing at the end of October 08.

I was no longer dancing, running or doing any strenuous athletic activity, but my knee was still hurting from normal walking on College campus, the pain was slight but the psychological effects of it were huge. I was unable to wrestle, dance and run and I felt devastated and every time I would take an awkward step, or my backpack would swing, I would fill some sort of pain and it become very draining for me. So I went back to the clinic and an older somewhat strange doctor examined me, I pointed out the clicking in my left knee that I was now noticing often Usually when I was straitening my knee and placing weight on that foot, after bending my knee in place. He ordered MRI on a suspicion of cartilage tear. The MRI came back unremarkable, but the pain remained. I cut down on the amount of walking I do to a minimum, but I still get the painful moments during my walks on college campus, or when I walk on uneven icy surfaces. Also, I may get the painful sensation when I change the angel of my direction during walking. I may also get the painful sensation when I am standing on it, especially when I lock it and put some tension on it such as hyper extended knee lock, which I do not do on porpose, but it just sort of happens when I am not thinking about it. I may also get a funny tingly sensation when I am simply sitting.

It is second half of January as I am writing this and the initial episode of injury happened end of July. I have not been very athletically active since the end of October, but I did have a few accidental twists during work, they were not particularly painful, but I guess they have sort of re injured my knee and prevented healing. To this very day, I do not know what the problem is, how long it is going to take to heal and I have not had the nerve to return to dancing
