My contention is that he is the greatest, and not having won a Super Bowl shouldn't tarnish that fact. All an avid sports fan has to do is look at the roster he had to work with. During all those years that they contended and made the playoffs, who was the starting running back? Linebackers? Safetys? Corners? 99% of the fans couldn't tell you who else he played with other than the "Marks Bros." That's because he carried an entire franchise on his shoulders (actually...arm) for years without any support. Now lets do the same with all the other QB's that are mentioned as the greatest. John Elway-first thing comes to mind is Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, Ed Mcaffery, Bill Romanowski,etc...How about Troy Aikman? He had Emmitt Smith, "The Moose Johnson", Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, etc...How about Joe Montana? He had Roger Craig, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, etc...Do you see the common threads between all the other choices for greatest QB of all time? While they were great QB's in their own right, they had running backs, wide receivers, safety's, cornerbacks, etc...that we can all easily name off the top of our head. But I again ask, "Who did Marino have"? Some bum named Abdul-Jabbar (Not the basketball great!) Had he maybe had Ricky Williams or even Ronnie Brown back then, then who knows? Or even a Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor for defense? The only quarterback to come close to having no-name talent and win the Super Bowl is Brett Favre. I know he isn't really popular right now, but he could make at case against Dan Marino. I'd still givet the edge to Dan, because Brett at least had Reggie White and a pretty darn good defense to go along with him.
O.J.>The Broncos had a "running back by committee" philosophy that helped when Terrell had the "Scottie Pippen" headaches. LMAO! You say Elway didn't have a defense? GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! The 1st Super Bowl win they were ranked the 6th best in the entire NFL. The following year...the 8th best above everyone. PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE ARGUING AND SOUNDING IGNORANT!
