Why don't they send out discovery probes, relaying information to each other (in a long line through interstellar space and beyond)? They could send one out every 5 years or so. This seems like the simplest idea to cover massive distances and retrieve information quickly and successfully. Also at the rate of every 5 years if one (or several) got knocked out, they would still be able to contact other probes in succession.
