since i have the very same thing going on in my kidneys and liver, this could be what is called polycystic kidney disease with liver involvement. if this IS what she has, she was actually born with it but in most cases you just do NOT have a freaking clue til the organs just get way too large or it gets found "incidentally" upon getting some type of scan for something else? the labs don't actually change with this particular disease til well into the 40s-50s range. function impairment just HAS to occur before anyones labwork actually goes out of the norm range.
in my particular situation with my PKD, unbelievabley all my kidney and liver labs are still all within the norm ranges desptie a huge globby mess that are my kidneys and liver right now, they are also very enlarged from the cystic development. it really IS kind of the weirdest of the kidney diseases to have.
one thing you DO need to know here if this just is PKD? it is an autosomal dominant kidney disease which means she would have had to have inherited it from her mom or dads side. this also could show up in her children as well unfortuently. i did not even have a freaking clue i even had this til age 40 when our son became very ill with liver failure from a mutated version of this PKD. that is when his doc told my hubby and i that we needed to obtain ultrasounds just to see what side of the family was carrying this. and of course it was mine. my sister has the very same kidney and also ther liver involvemnent too that i do.this can also create cysts in just about any area of the abdominal as well. i have one new cyst that was just discovered this year at my yearly ultrasound i have that is on my R ovary, not actually 'in' it? i also developed two other cysts actually IN a muscle in my low back called the psoas? this particular muscle is kind of 'saddled' by the L kidney so it can kind of migrate cysts over. at least that is what i was told.
sooo, this is the more 'likely' condition she just has. this does NOT cause cancer, and i have yet to read anything at all so far in my years of just researching this stupid disease that states otherwise. these are just fluid filled cysts that will pop in where ever they kind of feel like that dont actually 'overtake' healthy tissue like a cancer would, but will displace the healthy tissue to make room for the cysts. that is why the affected organs will get soo freaking huge. but this is also why it really takes a pretty advanced stage to actually create the out of range labwork too so thats good. like i said, very crazy disease.
just what type of scan discovered this and what was the actual scan ordered for? how are her kidney and liver labs at this point and how old is she. age does kind of make a huge difference in how much the cystic damage just is and impacts function. but likei mentioned abovce,if this is indeed PKD, any of her children should be at least obtaining ultrasounds just to see if they also have this. your husband could have this too(or any other siblings) just not know it yet like i didn't. sorry to have to tell you that part. but i really do think you just really need to know the 'possibles" here if this is indeed PKD she is dealing with. but i really do think this is indeedd PKD since you described MY liver and kidneys to a T in your post above. just do a bit of research on polycystic kidney disease and just see how symptoms compare. it will give you a much clearer understanding of this disease too. so sorry you are dealing with this crappy disease too. please DO let me know just what you find out, FB
