Cyst on Neck - Surgery?

Hello :)

Alright, I'm 18 years old and for the past eight months or so, I've had a bump about the size of a pea under my skin on my neck (almost directly over my carotid artery on the right side) but it didn't hurt and never got bigger so I just left it alone. Well, over the past week or two, it's gotten a little bigger and a lot more painful so I went to the doctor and after much poking and prodding, he said it was a cyst. He threw around a couple possibilities, including surgery, which I quickly dismissed as the thought terrifies me, even though it would be a very minor procedure I'm sure.

Well, since that visit the bump has gotten larger and much more painful and actually wakes me up at night. That combined with horrifying pictures of people who decided to not to have surgery has made me look at it much differently.

The major problem is that I'm quite certain they wouldn't put me under, which scares me to death because I would definitely know what was going on with its location and that physically makes me feel sick just thinking about it. So, that's a problem but if it's likely to get worse, then I'm sure I'll give in to surgery anyway, so why prolong the suffering?

Ha, I'm truly sorry for freaking out like this but... that's why I came here. And I came to this topic because my doctor said I'd have to go to a nose, throat and ear specialist to remove it.

So, thanks for anything you got for me!!

Go or don't go the choice is always yours. If you don't go the growth which sounds infected now is growing bigger with pus and junk and eventually it is going to burst open and what a mess and scar you will have. Or the thing may just stop growing and heal itself but there might always be that lump there sticking out. So orrrr you can grow up and get it taken care of. Good luck.

Hi cause! My dad had that same surgery. Ask the doctor, but most likely they will put you to sleep with a sedative so while you won't be under "general anesthesia" and there "is" the possibility you would wake up, you will most likely just sleep through the whole thing. Since it would be a very short procedure I would go ahead and get it done. Good luck with your choice!

Hey Cause

Good for you for making an appointment. Honey, when you go in, just tell the doctor your fears. It's okay. There are lots and lots of us who have fears about any kind of surgery. I am sure he will understand and do the best he can to accomodate you.

Best wishes
