Recent advice regarding the cleaning of one's cycling shorts/bibs is erroneous if not outright dangerous. A serious cyclist, of course, washes his/her cycling apparel on a daily basis for basic hygenic reasons: it prevents bacterial infections, prevents or lessens chafing, prolongs the life of the garment (especially the chamois); and, most importantly, daily cleansing reduces the advent of saddle sores. A serious cyclist putting in 300 miles a week--about the average distance for a dedicated recreational cyclist--certainly has multiple pairs of jerseys and bibs in rotation. Just with all aspects of his bike and kit, a knowledgeable cyclist places a premium upon quality shorts and jerseys, and it is not unusual for the serious cyclist to spend over $200 on a pair of bibs -- this is the item, obviously, that has the most contact with the rider's saddle!
