Cycling frequency of the compressor in a refrigerator?

If cycling frequency of the compressor is the time between the on/off of the compressor I think that it has to do something with the thermostat but I'm not sure exactly how it works. Can someone explain what controls the cycling frequency of the compressor in a refrigerator?
