I have had my 10 gallon tank for over 6 weeks now…it’s currently has 4 zebra danios. For about a month now my ammonia level has consistently been around a 3.0. I usually test it about every 2-3 days. The problem is that I started testing the Nitrite/Nitrate levels since about week 2 and all the tests since then have NOT detected any levels of either. How is it possible for neither the Nitrite nor Nitrate levels to rise in almost 4 weeks??…..Am I crazy to assume that my tank miraculously cycled in the first 2 weeks before I started testing for Nitrite/Nitrate and the level of ammonia currently in my tank is because it needs a water change? I have done 2 water changes in the past month (about 20% each time)…but since I have never detected any levels of Nitrite/Nitrates, I stopped because I figured I was slowing the process…….but even with the water changes, I should have had a rise in the Nitrite/Nitrate levels, no?
