Custom Shoes: How to dye denim on shoes black?

I have some Nikes that have some purple denim material on the toebox. Now, I like purple just as much as the next guy but it just doesn't look good on the shoes.
I've seen someone dye the denim black and I'd like to know a safe way to do so.
Any suggestions? And how do you know it's safe?
