They are getting a 6100 receiver, the number 6120 refers to the packed System, 6100 & 20" Dish.

The 6100 is the BASE HD model.

BTW, bell's website shows the price of 599 but doesn't show a 150$ discount, as mentioned by ringmaster. I did however see that price at another large local retailer. Does this price include installation of the receiver?

So what will happen in 2yrs when bell switches to mpeg4? The 6100 will still work, or is it only for new channels being added(mpeg4) that it would be a problem?

The 9242 is a true "two tuner" receiver, i.e. it is two separate receivers in one box. This is why it needs two cables in. You can set it up so that you can watch different programs on two different TVs. It does ship with two remotes - one IR only and one UHF - the UHF one can be used to control the second tuner from anywhere in a house.

As Nimiq pointed out, the only issue is that "tuner 2" does not send an "HD" feed, so the second TV would only get SD, not HD. If you could get either a component cable or HDMI cable from the 9242 to the TV in the basement, you could potentially get HD on that TV, but you'd have to watch the same channel as upstairs, i.e. you'd be getting a second HD feed off of tuner 1.

If you want a separate HD receiver for the basement TV and don't need a PVR, you can get used 6100s for a few hundred bucks or less. In fact, I think there's one for sale in the "buy sell" forum right now.

It looks like there's some deal at Best Buy right now that expires in a few hours to get a 9242 for $449. Since this is a purchase from a third party retailer, it would not typically include installation, which is a wholly a BEV service and, therefore, something you'd have to arrange with them. The 9242 replaces the 9200, which has virtually all of the same features, except the 9200 won't decipher "MPEG4" signals which BEV intends to start broadcasting in 2009. If you're OK with a receiver that may have limited or no HD capability two or three years down the road, you should be able to pick up a 9200 for $400 or less in the next few weeks (I just got one for $400).

The 6100 will become a regular SD receiver eventually, not sure when but it will be at least 2 years yet.

So if someone simply wants an hd receiver right now, they have no choice but to go for the 6120?

Tks for the update taxwit. My gf current has an edtv lcd, but would eventually like to go hd, so I guess the 9242 isn't an option, unfortunately.

I'm not sure what the tech will be installing in the basement for my gf to be able to use her parent's current receiver. However, when she does purchase an hd terminal, can we just swap terminals and she'll be ready to go? Are there any extra fees to be able to use hd vs sd on the 2nd tv?

I've seen prices of 99$ at bestbuy for the 6100. Is that only for new customers?

Looks like it
But for $299, it sounds like a bit of a rip off
Shop around (Ebay, craigslist, kijiji, etc...)
Even the big electronic stores may have a deal out
The 6120 has been at $299 for a long time now
Some have seen 9200's for $399, if I'm not mistaken (London Drug's)
I would push for the HD PVR though, you will enjoy this receiver much more than the 6120

That is correct the base HD receiver is the 6100, the other available HD Receivers are the 9200 & 9242, they are both HD Dual Tuner PVR's.
