My girlfriend's parents are currently using expressvu with a standard receiver. It looks similar to the 4100 but possibly an older model? They just purchased a plasma tv and are now looking at hd. Furthermore, my girlfriend would like to be able to watch tv on her basement lcd. A few questions regarding this situation:Will they need a new dish? Can my girlfriend use their current receiver (i don't know the model but iwll find out) even if they are using an hd receiver? Her parents do not need any installation, but there is no coax cable to the basement (only an old, unused videotron coax outlet). Will she be charged for installation or can we do it ourselves (pretty handy with renovations). What would be the best solution for her parents to get the new receiver (through bell or FS/BB?)

I know its not much to go on, but this is the info that is being provided to me. I'll find out whatever else I can.

I am guessing the existing receiver is a 3100, or if it is older, a 2700 or even a 4700.

Chances are that a new Dish will be required.

I would recommend a Pro Installation, as if they Upgrade to HD, this will be a Free Upgrade.

If they have a Plasma, I would imagine they would like to go up to an HD receiver.

The new 9242, is an HD PVR, this would give them HD to the Plasma and the Tech could also install a feed from this receiver to the LCD in the basement.

This would give the basement TV access to everything that is recorded on the 9242 as well but obviously in SD, not HD.

This is based on them buying the receiver, for $599.

Renting the 9242, would be pretty much the same, only this time there would be a charge of $100 for a Rental Certificate, refunded on the 1st, 2nd 3rd, 4th, Bill.....lol

There would then be an additional $20 per month Rental for the receiver.

Either option would cost an extra $10 for HD programming.

Either option would give free installation for the 9242, feed into the basement and Upgrade / Installation of the new Dish.

The existing Receiver would cost an extra $50 if it is being installed elsewhere in the house.

I would say that if you can get a free installation, let Express Vu do it.

Calling Express Vu to place the order is the easiest way.

If you get a 6100 HD receiver or a 9242 HD, the install from Bev is free. You may need a new dish to be able to put a dual LNBF to catch nimiq 2 which have all the HD channels...also free. The videotron cable in the basement can be used but not recommended. If you can change it do so. A Bev tech will not fische wires to change it unless it is easy to do.
I recommend a 9242 HD PVR. HD on the primary TV and SD on TV 2. Both are able to record and are completely independant. It will take 2 cables from receiver to dish and 1 cable from receiver to 2nd TV. All install is free.
You can rent for 20$ a month or buy one for about 400$?? choice is yours.still free install since you need the nimiq 2 upgrade promo.
Hope this helps.

If there is currently ONLY SD reception at the house the installation of HD now would be free.

If an SD receiver is to be used for now in the basement, the existing 4100 for example, a $50 charge would be levied for it's installation at the time of the HD installation.

Any Single Tuner HD receiver will replace any SD Single tuner receiver and just need the cable swapping over. To ensure HD reception there has to be both 91 & 82 signal coming down the Coax.

Once you pay for HD, an Extra $10 per month minimum, you can add upto 5 other HD receivers to your account with no additional costs, apart from the purchasing of them, obviously.

The information of the tech are right, except for one detail...9200 are currently sold 499$, the 9242 seems to be the new model that just came out therefore the price will be more

If you choose to rent the first 6 months of HD programming (10$/month as mentonned in Nimiq 1's post) will be free

To be eligible to get te upgrade one free of charge you need to suscribe to programming requiring the upgrade kit (HD is...) for a minimum of 6 months...

Not sure why you've concluded this. You indicated the gf's parents just got an HD plasma, therefore, they're going to need a BEV HD receiver. This means either a non-PVR (6100) or PVR (9200 or 9242). Obviously, the 6100 is a lot cheaper right now, but it is also only going to be good for a couple or three more years, as it will not handle MPEG4. Therefore, regardless of the situation with the TV in the basement, it seems to me you/gf/parents should still be giving serious thought to a 9242. It would then be just a "bonus" that it would allow for the basement TV to be connected and able to view different channels. I understand your gf's intention to eventually get a HD TV, but her present ED TV should work very well with the second feed from a 9242.

All a tech will ever install is a coax cable down to the basement if one isn't there already. They will also "setup" the basement receiver, which essentially consists of phoning BEV and giving them a couple of codes so that the receiver is added to your gf's parent's BEV account. This second step is something you can do yourself by phone or on BEVs website. Frankly, if there is already a cable down to the basement, I'm not sure I'd bother with having the installer do anything and save the $50 bucks - if your gf's parents end up with the 9242, the installation will include a SW44 switch with four outputs - you'd just screw the cable going downstairs into one of the SW44 outputs and you should get signal. See Nimiq's post re: fees.

Probably - virtually every deeply discounted BEV receiver for sale at big box retailers like BB and FS are priced with credits that are only available to new subscribers. They also typically require signing on for at least two years of BEV service. If your gf isn't interested in setting up a new BEV account, she should be able to buy a new one for a couple hundred or a used one for considerably less.

If you buy any HD unit, new or used and have no Nimiq 2 sugnal reception right now, you will still get free Upgrade and installtion of that receiver. This is an ongoing Promo, with no end date as yet.

There would be no 75$ charge...

There would be the rental charge as stated in Nimiq 1 post:

The rental cost also mentionned in Nimiq 1 post:

The 75$ charge is the charge for the technician...as also stated by Nimiq 1 this client woudn't have to pay it:

If ou don't know don't come misinform people...

Will they need a new dish?
Depends, but most likely yes. HD is on Nimiq 2 wihch requires a seconds LNB and a 20" skewable dish. However, if you upgrade, most likely Bev will install it for free. But note if you had any services on Nimiq2 already then it will not be free contrary to what is posted above.

Can my girlfriend use their current receiver even if they are using an hd receiver?
Yes, you can hook up SD receivers and HD receivers to the same dish. The distribution system will depend on the number and type of receivers but that can be left to the installer. If you want to do it yourself (if Bev won't do it for free) then there are lots of options such as a SW44 switch.

Her parents do not need any installation, but there is no coax cable to the basement (only an old, unused videotron coax outlet)..
Her parents may need a second line ...... for example if they go for a dual tuner receiver. The existing line to the basement *may* be ok to use if it is good quality RG6 cabling.

Will she be charged for installation or can we do it ourselves (pretty handy with renovations).
Depends, call and work a deal with Bev. Often they have a promotion to do the install for free. Partly depends on buying vs renting. Since additional parts are required, if you can get them to pay for it and do a professional install it is usually th way to go.

What would be the best solution for her parents to get the new receiver (through bell or FS/BB?)
Call and shop around. Sometimes FS/BB have "exrtas" that Bev doesn't have. If you do it throughthe Bev web site though you can often get additional credit. You have to do your homework. Deals change daily.

This was a common deal that may still be available:
Rent a 9242 (was a 9200) and Bell will install it free in most cases including the upgrade to your dish, switch cabling. Note that the "free" install only covers simple cases and is a promotion. A basic install can result in a $75 charge if you don't work out a deal. They would run 2 lines to your "main" HD tv location and then run a backfeed to a secondary location. This is a dual tuner so it can run both TVs independantly. In addition, you likely will have to pay a $100 rental certification fee that gets credited back on your first bill.

According to my gf's parents, they are getting the "latest" hd receiver (no pvr) and paying 299$ with installation. Will they have an issue with mpeg 4 in 2009 when bell starts using the new satellite? I'm not sure they know what the model number is

First of all, tks to everyone who replied! :)

A bit of an update. My gf's parents spoke to Bell. They will be charged 299$ for the new dish, hd receiver and wiring to the basement. (i don't know if they are getting any credits or anything like that) My gf will use their old receiver. Mom was told that if their daughter wants to go hd, she only needs to get an hd receiver.

My next question would be, what is the cheapest route to get an extra hd receiver if my gf wants to go hd? BB/FF prices are very cheap (0.01$ for standard, 99$ for hd receiver) but it seems to be for new customers only. If it costs 299$ for dish/receiver/install, can I get just the receiver for cheaper? Is it possible to buy just the receiver?

taxtwit: the reason I said the 9242 probably wasn't an option, was because my gf intends to get an hd lcd and would probably want to get an hd feed to the basement. From what I've read, the 9242 can be used for hd/sd for parent's plasma, but only feed sd to the basement.

The only MPEG4 model currently is the HD PVR (9242). They're likely getting a 6100 which is the original MPEG2 only HD receiver. Rumour is the the 6141 will be replacing that, but who knows when it will appear. I'm surprised BEV didn't lead with that one. The 6100 needs a replacement more so than the 9200.

The 6100 will become a regular SD receiver eventually, not sure when but it will be at least 2 years yet.

The receiver they are getting is the 6120. If her parents are simply looking for an hd receiver, what should be their course of action?

At 299$ you are probably geting a NON PVR HD receiver, the 6100...make sure you revise that with them if what you wanted was a PVR

If you want more than one HD receiver now is the time to order it...the second will also be installed free of charge as part of the Nimiq 2 "free upgrade" promo. Maybe Nimiq 1 could confirm that, but when I was there they told me the install of the dish, and all equipement to get Nimiq 2 (that would include the 2 receivers) are installed free of charge.

After that tech visit starts at 75$...you can also have extra mile charge if you live far, extra time, extra cabling, and so on...

What exactly is the 9242? Would both my gf and her parents be able to use this same receiver to watch television seperately (because of the dual tuner)? How would 2 people be able to operate the same receiver and be able to watch different channels? I didn't know this existed. Does it come with 2 remote controls

I don't think they were too interested in the pvr function, but I will mention it.
