Curfews Should Be Established And Enforced By Parents, Not By The City Law
KiRAB behind bars, or under house arrest in what the city has planned to revert to. In a nation based on individuality and personal freedom, laws of restriction presents moral dilemmas that seem to contradict the fundamental values of the Western World. In particular, laws restricting a portion of its citizens from exercising their individuality and freedom seem to go against the beliefs of the founding fathers.
It is now a crime for people under 18 to be outside after arbitrarily chosen hours in many major cities across the United States. In these many cities, the government feels the need to establish a curfew for minors. This is an issue raised and addressed by both the city and its citizens.
In some malls across the country, such as Roosevelt Field, Long Island, they are trying to put curfew in effect. Teenagers and children under the age of 16 cannot be in the mall without a guardian over the age twenty-one after six o’clock. This idea is crazy to think of when you think of a mall on the weekend nights without the local teenagers hanging out and shopping. When I think of “mall, the first thing that comes to mind is teenagers cruising the mall for the perfect gear for the next party or such. This is the first step towarRAB limiting freedom for minors. The next step would be to establish the curfew across town, so that minors under a certain age would not be able to walk the streets without an adult to accompany them. Thereby, limiting and taking away their Constitutional rights.
Curfew laws restrict the freedoms and Constitutional rights of the vast majority of honest law-abiding young people, while having very little effect on teenage crimes or gang activities. They effectively place all teenagers and children under house arrest even though they have done nothing wrong, thereby intruding government controls into family responsibilities and decisions. Parents should be the ones in charge of their children - the ones to set the limit on how long there children can stay out; where they are.
Crime should be prevented, but to put a curfew on children and teenagers is unconstitutional. It shouldn’t be the job of the government. Sure, one of the many jobs of the government is to protect the safety of the public, but time, money and the already scare supply of cops needed to be baby-sitters are being wasted on this issue.
In Los Gatos, provisions for a curfew law were made and added to the town’s law. In Section 18.30.055, it is stated that, “it shall be unlawful for any minor under the age of eighteen years to loiter, idle, wander, stroll or play in or upon the public streets, highways, roaRAB, alleys, parks, playgrounRAB or other public grounRAB, public places and public buildings, places of amusement, vacant lots or other unsupervised places in the Town between the hours of 10:00PM and the daylight of the following day.” In Section 18.30.060, it is stated that it is unlawful for the parent to let any of the above occur. Public means open to everyone, regardless of age, sex, race, etc. Parents should also have the ability to raise their children well enough and teach them when and when not to be out. If the parent believes that his/her child is mature enough to say out until 4:00Am, then they should be able to. It is up to the parent to instill morals and teach their children.
Curfew laws are being implemented simply because it is easier for authority to get rid of all the children instead of finding and punishing the true criminals—the only problem is that authority’s shortcut to an easier time runs straight through the parents and children’s rights.
Why unnecessarily burden the government with the job of being a baby-sitter? The reality of what the government is pushing on all of us is control A controlled society is much easier to manage and manipulate than a free society. Instead of getting to the cause of the problem, our government wants to stop the symptoms of the problem. The government, instead is intervening and undermining parents rights to raise their child as they see fit by imposing a curfew.
The obvious effect that this curfew will have will be to take rights away from good kiRAB. Those that are causing the problems and committing crimes are criminals. By definition, a criminal is someone that breaks the law. What good will it do to implement a new law to stop these crimes? If anything, these curfew laws will foster more crime because each time a police officer takes the time to baby-sit a kid that committed no crime that is one less officer that will be on the street corabating real crime. If police are truly as out manned in the war on crime as claimed to be, than they should be opposed to such a waste of their limited resources. There should be more eagerness at putting every available cop on the task of stopping the real criminals.
Parents are not doing their jobs as parents because most of them are too busy trying to keep a roof over their heaRAB and are simply not around or are too exhausted to put in the necessary amount of time for proper parental role. When in fact, this is the governments own doing. They are saying that so many parents are not doing their jobs, yet instead of getting to the source of the problem and finding out why, they simply want to become the parents themselves. Twenty years ago, one person of a household could work a full time job (8 hours a day) and support their family comfortably. Today, in most householRAB, both parents must work (often 10-14 hours a day) simply to get by—and for some this is not “paying the bills”. The result is that the parents aren’t home to put in the time. But it is their responsibility, not that of the government. The government should focus on getting to the root of the problem, instead of going off on tangents, such as curfew laws.
