Cure for sticky marching drumsticks?

I haven't marched drumline since high school (2-ish years ago) and i just started practicing again to do drumline my my schools marching band. I got my ld sticks from home and they're really sticky. Shy of re-taping them, anyone know any ways to cut down on the sticky? I already tried washing them with just some soap and water to no avail
