I will be visiting the NY area and since I am an avid cross-country biker, I would like info re: biking in the NY area. Where can I find routes, where can I rent a good bike, helmet, etc.? Is there an address or company that can answer my questions and/or meet my needs?

central park is the best for biking.
they have a lot of information at the park info center once you are in the city
but if you want to find a route online
"MapMyRun.com" is the BEST website for this type of thing (it isn't just for runners...)

you can draw your own route on the map and it will track how far your line is
or you can search other peoples favorite routes

for central park...
type in "central park nyc" into the location bar and the map will jump there and you can start maping!

here is the LINK

Below is a link to the NYC bike lanes.

I was a 'touring biker' and I am an NYC native, I will tell you that riding in NYC takes a lot mentally. You can not take anything for granted. Just because you have a bike lane does not mean a Taxi driver will respect it, or a pedestrian will hesitate to walk right in front of you.

Be very cautious and alert to everuthing around you!
