Cricket to Launch Android Phone

All good points. I'm interested to see what the "out the door" price will be for th Zio also. Funny how at the show the Kyocera Rep repeated about 100 times how they thought this phone should be sold for $170-$220 without contract. And then cricket pops up $300. :befuddled

I figure that maybe cricket will add a microsd card in the box and are charging more( add a $20 dollar card and add $60 to the price).
Or.
They they priced it at $300 so they can offer thier rebates/sales for $250 to drive sales(but are still selling it for what it should be anyway).

Either way you can't complain too much. The T-mobile 3G slide(no contact) is selling for $430(600 mhz processor). Same as Zio.(just with a with keyboard). Hell the regular tmobile 3G(528 mhz) is still $399.

But in the end it really comes down to how well the software on the Zio runs as to wether it is a good deal or not.

No Kidding! Gawd what a piece of junk that turned out to be. I really hope the Zio doesn't fall into that catagory. Looks great at first, but ends up being junk.

I just wish we'd get some news on the phone. Supposed to be released next month, and all the news for the zio is all from that one show 3 months ago. You'd think someone has had thier hands on one recently. Or at least has heard of a rumored release date. beginning of july, late july, fell back to august? Something?

No one is sure yet. or if they are they aren't saying. The leaked cricket pictures show MSRP as $299.
But That doesn't mean for sure it will be $299. If it works like most cricket phones, there is a store price and a web price. Store prices are higher as the store owners need to make money too. (and I support the local store if the price is pretty close). But sometimes on the web they have sales that are hard to pass up.

Now, having said all that. I'd expect the $299 price will be accurate. And thats what I'm planning on.

I think they will have an online rebate. But thats just a guess on my part. They may figure that the phone will be super popular and not offer one though.

And for a $300 dollar phone, I'd imagine the rebate to be around $50.(if one is offered)
So MSRP and in store price of $299 (online with rebate $249). Total guess on my part of course.

Don't forget if your pretty sure your gong to pick one up, you can register online now and they will send you a code for free overnight shipping when released.

**Note: while prices online are usualy a bit cheeper, if they are close. I'd urge you to support your local dealers first.**

Guaranteed you that the local sales rep will know nothing about the product. Cricket tends to give out the information like week or 2 before the product comes out. I am sure the price will be 300+ and I wouldn't be surprised if it is $400 dollars. They wouldn't have rebates at first either. I can foresee the rebates coming out during the Christmas season and I will predict that it will be $50 dollars mail in rebate or possibly $50 instant rebate/$50 Mail in. Question is, will Cricket have some control of the apps. Such as only Cricket based apps only, and who knows the true speed of 3G Cricket wireless service. The broadband card is terrible so I am slightly biased with their so called "3G".

There is no way in hell this phone will be $400. The leaked picture on the net shows crickets slide listing it as $299.
As for online rebate? I still think it will have one. Every phone online always does. Even my Hint when I bought it brand new(when first released) was like $40 off online only.

Otherwise people wouldn't bother to order online, they would just go to the local store.

Now, having said that. Since I am sure they feel this phone will be really popular. The Free overnight shipping from the web might be all you get.

Either way, $299 with free shipping for a midrange android phone with no contract and crickets cheep rates is a great deal to me. I'm just hoping that the bugs in the beta software,(according to kyocera), that caused the laggy performance at the release show have been fixed.

I had an opportunity to use the phone briefly about a week ago. I made sure to check out two things after seeing the early look at CTIA. I checked the phones speed first. The one thing that seemed to be universal in all of the CTIA videos posted, was that the device was sluggish. Kyocera claimed this was due to the devices being preproduction. I noticed no sluggishness at all. The device was very responsive.

Secondly, being an iPhone user, I am accustomed to an excellent on screen keyboard. I pulled up the web browser and began to type in an address on the keyboard and can say that while the browser performed fine, the keyboard sucks. I checked a buddies Android phone and found the same keyboard. Too bad. Hopefully it's better in 2.2.

The device is running straight Android, with no skin or customizations on top. So unlike HTC devices, with their Sense UI, this device should be easily upgradeable when new Android OS releases come out.

The device is also very thing, but felt good in the hands. The user did complain about the battery life, but I've heard that complaint from other Android users.

This will easily be the best phone in Cricket's line up. I don't expect that it will retail for $299. Kyocera has stated that the devices MSRP will be around $200. That slide presentation was from March so it may have simply been an estimate by Cricket.

Thank you very much for tha report. The sluggishness was what had me worried. So nice to see that it was due to the preproduction software.(like kyocera stated)
Also nice to see that it is still running straight Android (no skins) Woot!!

As for the keyboard. The standard android keyboard isn't very good. Lucky "there is an app for that". LOL

Now just a matter of waiting to find when it will be released.

Thank you for the report! I am hoping the price is reasonable along with the data plan. This is very exciting!
