Cricket to Launch Android Phone

I got to mess around with one of the tester zios. I have to say that overall i was impressed.
the touchscreen was way better than i expected it is very responsive.
it is very light.
I have a eris that is on 2.1 and flashed with cains solution and did some comparing.
Pandora loaded up significantly faster on the zio.
i like the touchscreen on the zio better than the eris.
it also has a slightly bigger and id say brighter screen than the eris.

i was told the rate plan would be $60 idk if thats including tax or not.

overall id say its a giant leap for cricket and should make a lot of angry evoke owners happy.

I was in the local Cricket store yesterday, Ive been bugging them for a month they told me middle of June last month. Now they are telling me end of June. The sales person said they are in the warehouses just the store managers are getting training on the phones for "costumer support". LOL Then the individual stores will start to receive the. As far as the Price I was told to expect $150-$200. Additionally I asked about tethering, the store manager told me no. But there are always ways around things.

Doesnt Cricket charge 25 dollars extra for the high end data phones? I remember cricket charging extra 25 dollars for the Motorola Evoke and the web was very crappy.

Thats good to hear. Thanks for sharing that. I've played with an Eris, so if it is on par with that, it Doesn't sound too bad at all then, heres to hoping they hit the market soon then!:clapping:

Oh, since you got to use one, does it have the pinch zoon feature (I doubt it does, but thought I'd ask.)

I'm sure they will tack on some kind of "smartphone" or "3g" data plan cost.
As for the Web being horrible on the Evoke... I don't think it was the web, There are a lot of people who have the "evoke" data plan on other phones and are having no problems. The Problem with the web on the evoke, was the evoke. That phone was just one big pile of crap.

I agree with the Evoke being horrendous in service because yes, it is a POS. Yet nothing has proved on a Cricket network that the 3G wireless data plan is legit or trustworthy. I am still biased about the extra data package fee for Cricket because Boost offers $60 dollar Blackberry plan. I dont know how Boost will set aside for their new Android phone which comes out real soon, but Cricket needs to bump up their game in order to survive the competition.

For $60 + tax, i'm just going to go with an EM+ plan on t-mobile with a MyTouch3G. Same cost per month but I think that as mentioned, there will not be the user base that the other phones have and so there will probably be a lack of interest in developing newer android roms.

I seriously use less than 30 minutes a month voice but tons of data so 500 minutes a month is no biggie.

I agree with you to an extent. But having seen 2 identical phones on Cricket (one with HTML plan, one without). I can tell you that it makes a huge diffrence. HTML data plan phone was a good 2 or 3 times faster than the other one, and speed wise it looked like true 3G to me. (compaired to when I was with AT&T).

As for the plan. I am interested to see what Cricket offers. I looked at boost, but sprints coverage honestly sucks in my area. (unless I live on, and never leave a major highway or the center of town.)

I am interested in seeing Cricket making some changes in their system. I was a customer rep for Cricket for about 2 years and after I quit, I see some changes after being a terrible service carrier for those 2 dreading years. I still have some resentment towards Cricket because the phones and the customer service are horrible. I remember when Evoke came out, the phones could not be replaced with insurance in the beginning. I don't know if that is the case still but I am sure that will happen when the new android phone comes out. So when the new Sanyo ZIO phone comes out, I am sure they will be priced more than $300+. IMO I am guessing in the range of $350~$420. Which could be overpriced for Android version 1.6

It is priced at $299.

But remember, this phone was built to be lower priced more affordable Android.
On one of the major networks, it would probably be a $100 + 2 year contract priced phone.

And Harware wise the Zio isn't that bad. Not anywhere near top of the line of course. But its running the same processer as the t-mobile my touch 3g slide, HTC legend, LG Ally, and the HTC Aria.
In the reviews I have read of those, they are pretty decent phones for normal everyday android use.
My Fav out of those is the MT3G slide. That really is a sweet little phone.

SO we know the hardware is capable of providing a good android experience upto 2.1. The question is if Kyocera's software people are good enough to to give us a smooth experience.

Videos from the introduction were "meh" at best. Phone really looked like it lagged a lot in some places. And giving the hardware and the basic 1.6 OS (kyocera said no skin), that really shouldn't be the case.

In thier defense the guy did say it was beta software running on beta hardware, and it was several months ago. So might have been something they got together quickly to just make show date.

Hopefully some of our cricket reps here will chime in and give us a good run down of the phone after they get thier hands on one. I don't need an EVO, just would like a good midrange android phone.

Holy ******* ****. New versions of Android don't get ported to some device like magic. It takes a ton of effort to custom build Android for any particular phone. Google doesn't do that. The phone manufacturer does it, and in a few cases, some very dedicated and hard working enthusiasts at xda.

That's why this phone is getting Android 1.6. More than likely when Kyocera started working on it, Android 2.1 didn't exist. Granted, five months is more than enough time to get things built. It seems Kyocera started early and progressed slowly.

If Kyocera doesn't give you Android 2.1, chances are no one will.

That said, Android 1.6 is not all bad. It runs nearly all of the same apps that Android 2.1 does. It's just missing a few things like support for multiple Gmail accounts, Facebook integration, and support for the Google Maps Navigation app.

So, I rounded up a G1 off of craigslist for $100. I was really hesitant to give up a hardware keyboard (I had a BB curve 8330). Like said before, this phone will be similarly spec'ed. It should not be too bad (the Zio has more ram than the G1) but I would venture to say there will be hardly any 3rd party efforts and therefor no 2.1 and i'm not sure i'd be willing to pay $300+tax. The G1/myTouch3G border on being laggy, I couldn't imagine this phone being much better than those.

You'll be pleased to find that your G1 does have a hardware keyboard!

The G1 is not laggy with a good ROM on it. Try CyanogenMod, and make sure you don't have too many apps sucking up memory. Install System Panel to check on that.
